Amway - Is Amway Your Hobby?

Many Anway IBOs get into the business with high expectations. They get in with oftentimes, a dream of early retirement, living a fabulous lifestyle, mansions, sports cars and "walking the beaches. In order to do thism IBOs are taught that they need to "plug into the system". So IBOs get on standing order, they attend all the meetings and functions, they read books and show the plan.

But because the Amway business has so many handicaps and shortfalls, the IBO soon falls into the trap of "playing Amway". The IBO will do their 100 PV, either by self consumption or selling, or a combination of the two, and will continue to listen to the cds or tapes, and will continue to attend every meeting. When I was an IBO, our group had many who did not sponsor a single person, yet they were at all of the meetings and functions. These folks, in my opinion, had Amway as a hobby.

A hobby is something you do in your spare time, usually something you enjoy. For many people, Amway meetings are a social event. It is evidenced when some people say they enjoy the meetings, being with "positive people", and they have become nicer as a result of their involvement. While this may or may not be a side benefit of the functions and meetings, it is not relative to the bottom line of a business. A business exists to make money. If a business is losing money, expenses are usually cut.

If you have been an IBO for more than a month or two, have you actually sponsored someone? If the excitement of being a new IBO has not resulted in acquiring new downline, it is unlikely that you will ever have a downline. If you have been in the system reading books, listening to stnding order and attending functions and showing the plan, and you have no results, you have Amway as a hobby and not a business. Don't feel bad, sponsoring other IBOs is not a common or easy feat. But as a business owner, you should think about your involvement in the business and if you find you are participating in a hobby rather than running a profitable business, then you should decide whether or not you are accomplishing what you set out to do.

Are you running a business (to make money) or are you playing Amway?

  1. Amway is a hobby if you treat it like one.

  2. True. As for me, Amway is the way of life. And excuse me, showing the plan is a business activity even if you have many "no's". Having many "no's" doesn't make Amway a hobby unless the way you show the plan is done like a hobby. Overall, judging on the quality of your blog, you sound to me like someone who's bent on finding fault in everything and then placing the blame on someone else. So, I guess that Amway was more of a hobby for you rather then anything serious regardless of what justifications you bring upfront to dispute that fact. And trust me, you sound like a very credible, professional guy at times but you got to admit that your attitude is what told you to quit and find fault in Amway rather than reflecting a little bit closer to home. Good luck in your job and stop bashing Amway.

  3. Anonymous from Canada, since nearly all IBOs do not make a profit, why is Amway a good idea? I have never blamed things on everyone. Did you not read my story? I was an up and coming IBO. I even rode in my diamond's car to a plan when I was still moving up the ranks. My upline's greed is what I saw and contributed to my decision to quit.

  4. You know what Joe, your personal story stays at the personal level, it doesn't apply to everyone else. My impression from your blog is that you're a bitter, jealous individual who's openly and persistently set on blaming and tearing down Amway to make other people relate to you. That won't happen my friend and reconsider what you do because there may be legal and financial consequences for your actions.

  5. Anonymous, do you even read my stories? Although I do think Amway is culpable, the main reason I fault the system is because of bad practices taught by groups like WWDB and BWW. I'm not bitter. I am quite happy with my life and I am debt free and financially stable.

There may be legal and financial consequences for my actions? Do tell......

  7. I have a employee who does wwdb and Amway with thier spouse. They have been involved for 5 years. They have been brainwashed to the point where they "delay gratification" on the most important aspects of life. They have been married several years without an engagement ring, never taken a single vacation. Live in a tiny studio, drive a rattle trap for a vehicle. Yet they spend thousands attending every function (even renting a car to make 3000 km rountrip journies), spend $1200/mo to buy vitamins, energy bars, water, protien powder ect... (Almost $400.00 in drinking water last month). They dress for sucess. They are running approx $1700.00 a month in the red. One of them thinks there is no other alternative in life to Amway and one day if they try hard enough (spend enough) that they will make it. That same person also claims if it were not for wwdb they wouldnt even be married. This invidual is brainwashed or atleast addicted to Amway. As a hardworking owner of a legitimate business it DISGUSTS me to know my employees wage is being redirected to the greedy pockets of thier upline sponsor. I pray they manage to get their spouse out and keep their marriage intact. Im offended Amway tells people thier JOB is negative when the victims legit employment is the only thing feeding this greedy Cult. Shame on WWDB for preying on the young and ambitious. Sucking thier life blood and preventing them from enjoying any fruit from thier own labour. Shame.

    1. It sounds like a classic Amway/WWDB form of cult thinking. The IBOs are taught that Amway/WWDB strengthens marriage, therefore, even if just for that, it's worth it. Then they are taught that a job dooms you to substandard living and that you must join Amway as your only hope to achieve any success.

They are also taught that they only way out of their situation is to immerse themselves in the WWDB system which means attending all the meetings and functions.

It's really just an elaborate and insidious scam in my opinion.

  8. The stupid shithead who posted as "Anonymous" on December 3, 2009 at 10:51 AM never came back to tell us what the "legal and financial consequences" to Joe Cool might be.

Here it is, seven years later, and still nothing.

It only goes to prove that with Amway, everything is bullshit.
