Amway - Brainwashed IBOs?

From Dictionary.com Brainwashing:

–noun
1. a method for systematically changing attitudes or altering beliefs, originated in totalitarian countries, esp. through the use of torture, drugs, or psychological-stress techniques.

2. any method of controlled systematic indoctrination, esp. one based on repetition or confusion: brainwashing by TV commercials.

3. an instance of subjecting or being subjected to such techniques: efforts to halt the brainwashing of captive audiences.

**When I was an IBO, our upline told us that we as IBOs needed to be brainwashed. That our brains had too much negative and that we basically needed to be re-programmed to think positively. That the standing order and functions and association would brainwash us for success. At least that was the pitch.

Having been removed from the business for some time now, I can see the strategy of the upline. Yes, they want to change your thinking, but not for the reasons they claim. They simply want IBOs to be positive about the Amway oppportunity and the tools business. By getting IBOs to have a myopic positive view of Amway and the tools, there is a better chance of retaining that IBO in the business, even if the IBO is losing money, month after month after month. They remain positive and think that their next plan or the next month will bring results that they have been working towards. Maybe success is right around the corner. Or at least they have become nicer people by staying in the business. Many IBOs forget why they joined the business in the first place, which was to make money!

While there may not be phyiscal coercion or torture as decribed in the textbook definition, I believe there is a systematic method of mind control at work. For example, uplines already know most of the objections by prospects so they program an IBO's response. Thus the term "tapespeak" as many IBOs give the same predictable answer to common questions. Uplines will also cleverly talk about how Amway is "hard work". I believe this is to avoid the claim of something being too good to be true because it involves work. But IBOs must have the idea that they will be rich. Why would someone agree to hard work for little rewards? It is why uplone will show off wealth such as showing slideshows of cars or mansions. Of course, they will never show their business tax returns as REAL business owners would do. If they did, I think many IBOs and prospects would be shocked at the poor financial conditions of the leaders they look up to. There is plenty of evidence out there. A prominent diamond in bankruptcy proceedings, diamonds having homes foreclosed, diamonds selling off homes. The list goes on.....

For IBOs and people seeking information on Amway, I urge you not to shut off your common sense when taking a look at the business. Contrary to what some uplines teach, the FACTS do matter and your bottom line (profit or loss) is just about the most important thing in running a business. Beware of brainashing and indoctrination, less you end up sounding like a mindless robot defending Amway when you are suffering a net loss of income every month.

  1. My wife has racked up $18,000 in debt over 2.5 years as an IBO, with no end in sight. She still goes to meetings, listens to CDs, reads book, attends functions, etc. She maxed out 2 credit cards and recently was approved for a $10,000 line of credit at her bank -- she currently owes $2,200 on the line of credit. What will happen when she uses up the entire $10,000 line of credit? Another bank will issue her more credit at a higher rate.

I can't approach her about her activities, because she takes everything personally and claims I don't support her. How could I in good conscience support her participation in a venture whose folks misrepresent and omit essential information from IBOs. My wife probably thinks that success is right around the corner, but based on the last 2.5 years, I'm not holding out hope.

Sure, some start ups take a while to make money. But a start up that has lost money its first 3 years, and continues to bleed money, needs a change in management or a reworked business plan. If you beat your head against the wall 3 times, and it hurts all 3 times, it's likely to hurt the 4th time, 5th time, 6th time, etc., unless you make changes to your approach.

I'm at my wits end. Somebody please tell me how in the world you actually make money in Amway, and by "make" money, I mean make a profit, meaning income minus expenses.

  3. It is an irony that people from the stage and on the cds would tell it is stupid to expect different results, while doing the same things but at the same time these same people when counselling their downline personally would say "keep doing what you are doing and you will get to where we were, we are proud of you, awesome...blah blah blah."

The only way to make profit through Amway is to retail products, cut down the system expense completely and order ONLY the kind of products through Amway, which you would have ordered prior to being in the business.

Seth just take ur wife on a vacation for a few weeks. If she is out of the system influence for a few weeks, there is a very high possibility that she might get out of Amway completely. Good Luck

  4. Somebody please tell me how in the world you actually make money in Amway... well, why don't you go to a business presentation meeting with your wife first? Then take some personal time to study and get a game plan! Third, pursue it consistently and persistently! Fourth, expect disappointments, lots of them! And last, keep pushing and the rewards will come! Or are you telling me that you'll quit at the fourth step? How about the first? Sir, you have to discipline yourself to success and I mean it! No free lunch, that's disappointing, isn't it?

  5. After hearing Seth's wife has spent $18,000 and 2 1/2 years building the "business" I highly doubt he is looking for a free lunch.

  6. After hearing that Seth's wife has spent $18,000 and 2 1/2 years building the "business", I also heard that Luc Jouret, founder of The International Chivalric Order Solar Tradition, says that he was a member of the 14th Century Christian Order of the Knights Templar during a previous life and that his daughter Emanuelle was "the cosmic child" on top of he, also being the second coming of Jesus Christ. Just because he says so, I highly doubt the he is not Jesus Christ after all! Please, this is embarrassing! Get a life, seriously!
